Banking- Payment And Settlement

PAYMENT AND SETTLEMENT SYSTEMS ACT, 2007:-
This act was passed in 2007 and was implemented in 2008.
Under this act RBI or a company Authorised by RBI can conduct payment and settlement in India.

Authorised Company:-
NPCI :- National Payment Corporation of India. Its owner is RBI. It launched the Rupay Card.

Types of Payment :-
(i) Paper Based through cheque, PO, DD etc.
(ii) Electronic Based through EFT, NEFT, RTGS, ECS, IMPS
(iii) ATM, Card Based through ATM cards, Debit Cards, Credit Cards, POS, etc.

(i) Paper Based :-
Paper Based payments can be done through cheques, DD, PO, etc in which papers are involved.

CTS:- Cheque Truncation System.
It is the use of virtual image of the cheque by the Banks for clearing purpose.

CTS 2010:- It was implemented from July 31, 2013. It is a standardised security feature common to the cheques of the banks participating in the CTS system.

MICR:- Magnetic Ink Character Recognition.
It is a 9 digit numeric codewhose first 3 digit is the city code, next 3 digit is the bank code and the last 3 digit will be the branch code.

(ii) Electronic Based:-
(a) EFT is Electronic Fund Transfer
EFT is a Scheme introduced by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to help banks offering their customers money transfer service from account to account of any bank branch to any other bank branch in places where EFT services are offered.

(b) RTGS / NEFT :- 
RTGS is Real time Gross settlement And
NEFT is National Electronic Fund Transfer.

This is an alphanumeric code used to do the transaction using NEFT or RTGS facilities. It is a 11 digit code which consist of

IMPS:- It stands for immediate payment services. It was Launched by NPCI in 2010. It is an instant & 24x7 service electronic fund transfer thoriugh mobile phone. A minimum of 50Paise and a no limit on maximum amount is there for transaction.
A committe on mobile banking was headed by B. Sambamurthy.

ECS:- Electronic Clearing Services is repetitive and periodic in nature. It was introduced by RBI in 1990s. It is a electronic paperless system offered to the companies for making or preceding bulk payments which are repetitive and periodic in nature.

  • The interest rates shall be decided by the bank but it shall not be more than those offered to the Resident of India.
  • The amount is deposited in INR & it is repatriable upto 1Million USD per year after payment of Taxes.
  • Foreigners on a short term visit to India are offered only NRO accounts.
(ii) NRE Accounts:- Non Resident External Rupee Account.
  • This account is for the purpose of income earned by NRI/PIO outside India for transferring to India.
  • CA/SA/RD/FD are offered.
  • On term deposits upto 1 year interest rates are decided by RBI and for the rest by the Banks.
  • The amount is deposited in INR and is Fully repatriable after payment of taxes.

(iii) FCNR(B) Accounts:- Foreign Currency Non Resident Bank Account.
  • This account can be opened in fully convertible foreign currency.
  • RBI has allowed NRI/PIO to open this account in following currency:-

(e) Great Britain POUND
(f) EURO.
  • Only term deposit of 1-5 years are offered.
  • The interest Rates are decided by Banks but, the upper limit is decided by RBI.

  • Banks can provide loan against the deposits.
(iv) RFC accounts:- Resident Foreign Currency Accounts.
  • This account is for the returning NRI/PIO to India and they can transfer there deposits from NRE & FCNR(B) to this account.
  • CA/SA/FD/RD are offered.
ESCROW, NOSTRO & VOSTRO

(i) ESCROW:- It is a separate bank account for keeping money that is the property of others & normally no interest are paid on such accounts.

(ii) NOSTRO:- It is a Bank Account held in a foreign country by a domestic bank dominated in the currency of the foreign country..

(iii) VOSTRO:- It is a bank account held by a domestic bank in its home country for foreign banks.

ARBITRAGE:-
The simultaneous buying and selling of an Assett in order to benefit from the difference in price is called Arbitrage.

DEPOSITS:-

In Banking System, deposits are of two types:-

(a) Demand Deposit.
(b) Term/ Time Deposit.

(a) Demand Deposit :-
In this type of deposits, we can submit or withdraw money anytime. There are two types of Accounts under demand deposits:-
(i) Current Account (CA)
(ii) Saving Account (SA)

(b) Time / Term Deposit :-
In this type of deposits, our money is fixed for some particular period. We can withdraw our money anytime bu the loss in interest will be ours.
There are two types of Accounts under Term deposits:-
(i) Fixed Deposit (FD)
(ii) Recurring deposit (RD)
In FD & RD, for same time period same interest rates will be there for deposits of less than 1 Crore.
Loss of interest on Breaking FD/RD is governed by RBI.

--> Interest Rates for both demand and term deposits is decided by the Bank.
--> Interest type is compound i.e., Interest is calculated on the compound interest formulae.

BULK TERM DEPOSIT:- 

(i) Bulk term deposits means deposit of Rs.1 Crore and Above.
(ii) Banks are free to decide different interest rates for the same time period bulk term deposit.
(iii) Banks are free to decide penalty interest rates on premature withdrawal of Bulk term Deposits.
